My Experience With World Vision

At the new year party on December 2003, I asked my wife what should we do different or new this coming year. She said that she would like to sponsor a child through one of the charities that mail the sponsors a periodic report card and a picture of the child.

That immediately struck a chord in me and once again, I felt that I was being guided to a path that involved some interaction with a charity and I immediately realized that just sponsoring a child would not be give me the satisfaction that I was looking for, but it was definitely a step in the right direction and a wake up call.

It took us a little while to find “Thomas Thomas Shija”, a young boy from Tanzania. At that time, Thomas was a two year old child and he was a playful little boy looking deadly serious in his picture.

In 2004 we got another picture of Thomas, and he has wearing the same pair of shorts that he was in his picture of 2003.

I was so impressed with the way the folks at World Vision allowed for a donor to feel this connected to a sponsored child. I just wanted to feel the same connection with a cause/charity that involved my own community, but nothing on the web was anything close to this.

Going to the Gurudwara and seeking some direction in this regard was not really an option as I was looking for people driven to action with some sense of professionalism. I do not mean any dis-respect to the folks that run/manage Gurudwaras here but that is how I felt at that time.

So I continued my search on and off.
